Cathy began her career in graphic design and editorial
illustration, working as art director for
The Washington Monthly. She co-owned a graphic design firm,
taught bookmaking classes throughout Maryland and is currently the
art director at NOVA Research Company in Bethesda, MD where she designs
publications and exhibits for the National Cancer Institute. In 1997,
she illustrated Simple Secrets of Parenting: Easy as ABC by
John Q. Baucom for the Child Welfare League of America, followed in
2005 by the publication of Wild Washington: Animal Sculptures A
to Z.
During the past few years she has renewed an interest
in painting and drawing. Her paintings are becoming spare, with a direct,
sculptural quality. Painting and illustration is a process of constant
problem solving, of finding the essence of a subject.
To paint well, you have to see the ‘bones’ first.
You have to see and understand the underlying structure of your subject.
