Wild Washington: Animal
Sculptures A to Z is an illustrated alphabet
book about animal sculptures in Washington, DC. Although well-known
monumental sculptures adorn the parks, bridges and entrances to the
nation’s capital,
less well-known sculptures, friezes and decorative elements found on
fountains, buildings, rooftops and fences also form a part of Washington’s
unique urban landscape. Through riddle poems and compelling black-and-white
photo-illustrations, the authors introduce twenty-six animal sculptures,
from the anteater at the zoo to the gulls of the Navy-Marine Memorial,
the penguins at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the unicorns on
Unicorn Lane, to the zebra on the Smithsonian carousel on the Mall.
Short prose passages provide information about the artist and the animal’s
habits and habitat, and a map of animal sculpture sites makes finding
the sculptures easy and fun. An extensive list of animal sculptures
from all over the city, accompanied by thumbnail photographs, follows
the alphabet portion of the book. As noted by James M. Goode (historian
and author of The Outdoor Sculpture of Washington, DC), Wild Washington is
a “welcome addition to our knowledge of the sculpture as well
as the architecture and landscape of our nation’s capital” and
a “delightful tool” with which to appreciate the city’s
menagerie in metal and stone.
